Our Most Common Pesky Pests

German Cockroaches

Adult German cockroaches are 1/2 to 5/8-inch-long and tan to light brown Even with fully developed wings, they cannot fly. The German cockroach is small, with two dark parallel lines running from the back of the head to the wings. German cockroaches usually prefer a warm, moist environment, so you might find them in your kitchen near your dishwasher, stove, or sink. They are especially fond of starches, sweets, grease, and meat products. German cockroaches produce odorous secretions that can affect the flavor of various foods. When cockroach populations are high, this may result in a characteristic odor in the general region of the infestation. Disease-producing organisms such as bacteria, protozoans, and viruses have been found on cockroach bodies.

ANTS…ANTS…ANTS!!

Ants can often be driven into your home during heavy rains. While you can’t control the rain, here are some ways that you, as a homeowner, can make your home less attractive to ants:
  1. Keep grass cut down around the house by weed eating
  2. Keep bushes and trees trimmed back away from the structure.
  3. Seal all areas around pipe penetrations entering the home.
  4. If the caulk around the windows is dried out and cracking, re-caulk the windows.
Remember, once ants are in a home, they love food and open drinks left out on kitchen counters, tables or in bedrooms (teenagers are great at doing this). A one-time service may take care of the initial problem, but a monthly program is the most effective way to control any pest problems you may have. There are other programs as well, including every other month, quarterly, semi-annual or annual pest control service.

Brown Recluse Spiders

Even if you haven't seen a brown recluse spider in your home, it doesn't mean that you don't have them. Please pay close attention to the picture and look closely at the violin shape on its back. The symbol is not a full-proof indication, but often it's a brown recluse spider. The legs are rather thin and solid in color.

Below are some ways that you can help reduce your odds of getting a brown recluse spider bite and are just some proactive things that you, as the homeowner, can do on your own.
  1. Brown recluse spiders are true to their name. They are reclusive and like dark areas of your home (closets, under beds, attics, unused rooms, etc.). Keep this in mind when you store items. Slowly start cardboard boxes used for storage into plastic tubs/containers. Make sure you wear gloves and a long-sleeved shirt, and the container tops snap into place. These spiders are not aggressive, but they will bite you to protect themselves.
  2. Since these spiders are reclusive, they do not want you to see them. Therefore, they move around your house against the wall like mice. They look for a water/food source or to mate. If you have a bed skirt that touches the ground, remove it immediately. These spiders will use this as a ladder to climb up on your bed while you are sleeping. If you have your bedposts against your drapes and the drapes drag the floor, pull your bed out to where it isn't touching.
